Vent: A customer tried to talk me into ignoring a safety recall today

I had a guy in the shop this morning, real nice fella, brought in his 2021 gravel bike for a tune up. I noticed the fork had that known crack issue near the crown, the one the manufacturer put out a bulletin about six months ago. I told him straight up I can't work on it until he gets the replacement fork from the warranty. He got all defensive, said he read online that it's just cosmetic and a few shops still service them. I stood my ground, told him my liability insurance would drop me in a second if I touched it. Then he said another shop three towns over already did his brakes last month and didn't mention a thing. That really hit me different. It made me wonder how many guys out there are just looking the other way to keep a customer happy. Have any of you had to turn away work because of something like this?

It's just part of a bigger thing where people pick and choose which rules apply to them until something goes wrong, then suddenly it's everyone else's fault.

Is it really that hard for people to just own up when they mess up, @riley_taylor? I see this all the time at my church group, someone skips a few steps on a project and then wants everyone else to fix it for them. What do you think makes someone go from bending the rules to pretending they never did?
