Serious question, has anyone else used a zip tie as a temporary derailleur hanger alignment gauge?
I was stuck on a trailside repair with a bent hanger and no tool, so I threaded a zip tie through the frame's axle slot and used it as a visual reference point against the cassette. What's your go-to field fix for a bent hanger when you're miles from the shop?

Those little stamped gauges are a total game changer for sure.

It’s funny you mention that because it’s the same with so many things we think we can eyeball. I’ve seen it in the gym all the time actually people just assuming they’re in the right position without checking, then wondering why they’re sore in the wrong places. A simple little tool like that gauge is basically the same as using a mirror for form it takes the guesswork out of it. And yeah, once you have a reliable little thing like that in your pack, you’re way less likely to just wing it and end up with a mess. It’s like the difference between a rough estimate and a known measurement, you know? Feels way better when you actually know it’s right.

That zip tie trick is clever... but honestly, I've never trusted visual alignment for anything but the worst bends. Even a little off and your shifting is a mess. I always carry one of those cheap, stamped metal hanger alignment gauges now. It lives in my pack and has saved me more than once.
