I used to hate on cheap cable housing until I tried Jagwire's basic kit

Always thought you had to spend big on Shimano or Campy housing for a clean build. Grabbed a $12 Jagwire kit on a whim last month for my commuter and the shifts are just as crisp after 200 miles. Anyone else find a budget component that actually holds up?

Yeah, the Jagwire basic stuff is solid for the price. I ran a set of their $10 compressionless cables on my touring bike for a year and they never gave me any trouble.

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I ran Jagwire basics on my old flat bar commuter and ended up using them for like three years because I just kept forgetting to swap them out. They got all crusty and the housing started cracking near the shifters but honestly they still shifted fine, just felt a bit gritty. I only changed them because the cables snapped at the ferrule after I dropped the bike loading it onto a bus rack. That was a pain to fix on the side of the road with a multitool and some electrical tape I found in my bag. But yeah, for ten bucks you really can't complain, especially compared to the cheap no-name steel cables that come with some bikes.
