I quit greasing bottom bracket threads after 12 years, here is why I flip flopped
For years I slathered grease on every bottom bracket thread out of pure habit, because that is what the old timer who trained me at his garage in Boise back in 2010 drilled into my head. About 8 months ago I was chasing a creak on a customer's bike and pulled the BB, and the grease had basically turned into sticky grit that held onto road dust. Now I clean the threads dry, hit them with a light wipe of blue thread locker on the drive side only, and torque to spec, and I have not had one creak come back. I know this goes against what most of us were taught, but out here in the high desert dust the grease just becomes a magnet. What are you all running on BB threads in dry climates, grease or something else?
Grease turning into grit in desert dust sounds more like a cleaning schedule problem than a grease problem. Plenty of folks out here run grease for years without creaks, they just don't let it sit long enough to turn into paste.
