I finally had to pick between a full rebuild or just replacing the worn parts on a 1992 Stumpjumper

The bottom bracket was shot and the headset was crunchy, but the frame was solid. I could have bought a new cartridge BB and headset for about $60 total and called it good. Instead I spent three days and over $200 on a full strip, repack, and polish, keeping every original part that still worked. It rides like a dream now, but my wife thinks I'm nuts for the time it took. Anyone else get stuck on a full restore when a simple fix would have done the job?

Totally get it. The right way is the only way with a classic bike like that. A quick fix feels wrong when you know it deserves the full treatment. That time spent is part of the story now. Your wife might not see it, but the ride tells you everything you need to know.

Read a great line once... it's not about fixing the bike, it's about fixing yourself.
