Had a customer bring in a bike with a cassette held on by a zip tie
Guy comes into the shop in Phoenix last Tuesday. Says his gears are skipping. Look at the back wheel and the lockring is gone. Someone used a heavy duty zip tie through the spokes to hold the whole cassette on. Took a photo before I touched it. Had to explain why that was a very bad idea. Ever seen a 'repair' that made you just stop and stare?

Gotta give the guy some credit for making it work. In a real pinch, a zip tie is better than nothing if it gets you home. The real problem is riding it like that for weeks after. That fix is a clear sign someone didn't have the right tool or part, but they understood how the thing needed to stay together. It's a temporary hack, not a repair.

Oh man, I totally used to judge those zip tie fixes. But you're right, it shows they at least knew what had to happen to keep it rolling. I guess getting home safe beats being stuck perfect.

Exactly. Keep a few spares in your glove box.
