Guy at a bike swap in Columbus told me a wheel"built itself" and I tried not to laugh
I was digging through a $5 bin at a swap meet in Columbus last weekend when I heard a guy tell a kid that his rear wheel had "basically built itself" after a few turns of the spoke wrench. I have laced probably 300 wheels and I can tell you that tension is never even the first time, no matter how good you are. He then said 22 on the drive side is "close enough" and that myth spreads fast to people who trust it. What is the worst wheel building advice you have overheard from someone selling parts at a swap?
22 on the drive side being close enough is wild, since that side carries most of the tension anyway. A wheel can feel ok in the stand and still fold on the first hard corner. Bet that kid learned the hard way a month later lol.
