Debate: the old timer in Tucson told me to never grease a coaster brake arm, but half my shop says always grease it
He grabbed the arm off my bench at his shop on 4th Ave, wiped it clean with a rag, and asked me if I wanted the brake to grab or to slip, so now I want to know which camp you all fall in and why.
Here is the case for the old timer, and I will die on this hill. Grease on that arm is what causes the brake to grab and lock when you least want it, because the grease holds dust and grit and turns into a paste that drags on the shoes. Dry and clean is how those brakes were meant to run, and the arm barely moves anyway, so what are you even protecting from wear? The drag and the squeal and the sudden lockup come from the crud the grease collects, not from metal on metal. Half your shop greases it because that is what they were taught, but the guy on 4th Ave has been fixing those hubs for longer than most of them have been riding.
