DAE lose almost 3 hours to a seized bottom bracket that turned out to be a stripped thread?
Heads up for anyone pulling cranks on older frames this season. Last Tuesday a guy rolls in with a 90s mountain bike, says the bottom bracket is creaking, and I figure it is a 20 minute job, so I tell him come back at lunch. Two hours in I am still fighting it, the drive side cup will not budge no matter what, and I have soaked it in penetrating oil twice. I finally get it out and find the frame threads on the non drive side are chewed up, so the cup was cross threaded and just spinning in place instead of backing out. That sent me down a rabbit hole of chasing the threads with a tap, cleaning out metal shavings, and test fitting three different cups off the shelf before one seated right. Three hours gone on what should have been a quick swap, and the customer still had to hear that his frame might not hold a new bracket for long. Has anyone found a good way to spot bad BB threads before you start wrenching, or do you just assume the worst on anything older than 2000?
