Check those shifter cable ferrules before they bite you
Last Tuesday I had a customer's bike on the stand in my shop in Dayton and the rear derailleur kept skipping even after a fresh cable, turns out the ferrule at the downtube had cracked and was letting the cable flex under load. I swapped it with a cheap steel one and now I'm checking every ferrule on every tune-up, how often do you guys replace them as standard practice?

A cracked ferrule on a downtube is pretty rare in my book. I've been wrenching 12 years and maybe seen it twice, so checking every single one on a tune-up feels like overkill to me. Most ferrule problems I run into are the plastic ones that get chewed up inside the shifter housing, not the frame stops. A quick wiggle test when I'm running the cable tells me plenty. If the housing seats solid and the cable moves clean, I leave it alone.
