Am I the only one whose shop mentor said never lube a chain with WD-40 and was dead right?

My old mentor Ray at a shop in Sacramento told me back in 2019 to never spray WD-40 on a chain, and I blew it off thinking he was just old school. Two months of using it as lube on my commuter and the chain stretched so bad I had to swap the cassette too. What are you all using instead, and did anyone else get that same warning early on?
