TIL my old credit union teller was right about skipping debit card rewards
Back in 2016 I sat down with a teller named Rosa at a credit union in Tucson and she said the 1% debit rewards were not worth it because the swipe fees come out of my own pocket somewhere. I ignored her for almost 4 years and kept chasing the points on every coffee and gas run. When I finally added up my statements, I had earned $87 in rewards while paying $340 in overdraft fees from rewards transactions posting late. Rosa retired last spring but I still think about that conversation every time a cashier asks me debit or credit. Has anyone else done the math on their own rewards and come out behind?
