Spent $15 a month on a budgeting app and it paid for itself in 3 months

I signed up for YNAB back in February because I kept overdrawing my checking account. It cost $15 monthly but after tracking for 90 days I spotted I was wasting $60 a month on random subscription services I forgot about. Cancelled those and now the app basically pays its own way. Has anyone else found a tool that actually changed how you handle money?

Just switched from big bank to a credit union after seeing the overdraft numbers

Ngl I was always one of those people who thought credit unions were just for people with bad credit or whatever. But last week I was looking at my Chase statements from the past year and I had paid over $400 in overdraft fees alone. I stumbled on this breakdown on NerdWallet showing how credit unions cap overdraft fees at like $25 max while most big banks still charge $35. Plus their savings rates are averaging 3.5% right now versus like 0.01% at the big guys. I moved my checking and savings to a local credit union on Thursday. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed a real difference in fees?

I finally ditched paper receipts for digital ones at my shop

I ran a small repair shop in Portland for 2 years and always gave paper receipts until a customer called me out for wasting trees. He said I was printing 50 receipts a day that mostly ended up in the trash. I switched to email receipts last month and now I save about $15 a month on paper and ink, has anyone else made this change in their business?

Was convinced digital wallets were a gimmick until I forgot my physical wallet at home last Tuesday and paid for $45 of groceries with just my phone in 10 seconds flat.

The contactless tap at the register in the Harris Teeter on Broad Street was so fast the cashier didn't even blink, and I didn't have to fumble for cards or cash, so who else here went from skeptic to daily user after something like that clicked for you?

Vent: Zelle failed on a $2,800 payment yesterday and support was useless

I was trying to send my contractor the final payment for a garage remodel here in Portland. Zelle showed it as pending for 6 hours then just dropped it with no explanation. My bank said it's not their problem, they just facilitate the transfer. The contractor is now saying he wants cash instead which makes me nervous. I lost a whole day of work trying to chase this down with customer service. Has anyone else had Zelle eat a big payment and actually get it resolved?

Switched from paper statements to digital back in 2015 and it took me years to realize my bank had a free document vault I could have been using

I only figured it out last month when a teller in Portland mentioned it listing off account features, and now I dump all my scanned receipts and tax forms in there instead of hunting through emails for the right attachment.

Just learned FedNow is actually live now, not some future thing

I was reading the Federal Reserve site last night. Turns out the instant payment service FedNow went live back in July 2023. Over 900 financial institutions are already using it. That surprised me because I figured it was still in pilot mode or something. My credit union doesn't offer it yet though. My bank doesn't either actually. Anybody else's bank or credit union actually using it for transfers yet?

So I signed up for a budgeting app that ties to your bank account and categorizes everything. First month I saw I was spending $80 a month on fast food alone which was a wake up call. Cut that down and saved about $200 over three months. But the app kept glitching and labeling random charges wrong. I had to fix categories all the time. Got annoying quick. My wife thinks I should stick with it since the savings are real. I say the time spent fixing errors isn't worth it. Anyone else had a similar experience with these tracking apps?

The first person said they could only handle lost cards, not transaction disputes. The second person put me on hold for 20 minutes and then hung up. Unpopular opinion: Chip-and-PIN is way better than contactless for security

I see everyone loving tap-to-pay these days, but after my card got skimmed at a gas station in Chicago last month, I switched back to inserting the chip and typing my PIN. The extra 5 seconds feels worth it when you know no one can run a $500 charge without your code.

Why does nobody talk about how Venmo handles disputed payments?

I was at a coffee shop in Portland last month when I sent $45 to a guy for some used camera gear we agreed on. The gear never showed up and he ghosted me. I filed a dispute with Venmo and waited 2 weeks just for them to say "we can't reverse this because it was a friend transaction." Now I'm out 45 bucks and basically learned the hard way that Venmo's purchase protection is basically useless unless you use the goods/services option. Has anyone actually had success fighting a Venmo dispute?

I finally figured out why my checking account kept dropping by $40 every month after I filled up at that Shell station on Broadway. Turns out the pump reader was tampered with and I never checked the seal, been doing it wrong for 2 years. Anyone else here actually look at those security stickers now?

Remember when we had to mail actual checks for utility bills? I miss nothing about that.

I was thinking back to 2005 when I used to sit down every first of the month with a stack of envelopes and a checkbook. Writing out 8 or 9 checks for rent, power, water, internet, and then hunting down stamps... it ate up a good 45 minutes at minimum. Now I just open my banking app in bed and auto-pay everything in maybe 3 minutes flat. The change happened around 2012 when my credit union finally got a decent mobile app with bill pay built in. Has anyone else here gone fully paperless and never looked back, or do you still keep one bill mailed just as a backup?
