Stumbled on a wild stat about debit card swipe fees last night

I was digging through some old Federal Reserve reports for a side project and found out that in 2022, the average debit card swipe fee was about 45 cents per transaction. That adds up to over 50 billion dollars a year in total for the whole industry. It honestly blew my mind since I never think about those tiny fees when I tap my card at the grocery store. Has anyone else looked into this and found something that surprised you?

Never really thought about it either until I saw this. 45 cents a pop doesn't sound like much but when you think about how many times people use their debit cards every day it's wild how fast that adds up to billions. It's kinda gross honestly how much those little fees rake in without anyone really noticing.

Started checking my bank statements last month after seeing something similar and holy moly I was not ready. I paid like $17 in overdraft fees and another $8 in atm fees just in one month because I keep using random sketchy machines when I'm out and forget to check. And that's not even counting the stupid monthly maintenance fee my bank sneaks in. It's basically a hidden tax on people who aren't rich enough to avoid it.
