My local credit union's app went from a 2-star joke to a 5-star tool in under a year after they hired a new tech lead from a fintech startup.
The difference was night and day, going from constant login failures and a 15-second load time for my balance to instant biometric login and real-time transaction alerts, which honestly makes me wonder if the big banks are even trying anymore when a small shop can pivot that fast.

The "simple mode" thing actually exists in a lot of these apps now, just usually buried in settings under something like "basic view" or "classic dashboard." It's not always a toggle right on the main screen like people expect. William.kim's point about adding features nobody asked for is pretty common with fintech people who focus on what's trendy instead of what's functional, but most credit unions have a member advisory group that could step in before it gets that bad if they actually listen to them.

Honestly I've seen the opposite happen. My credit union brought in some hotshot from a tech company and the app got way worse. They added a bunch of fancy features nobody asked for and the simple stuff, like paying a bill, became a huge hassle. It felt like they were just copying apps for younger users and forgot about making it easy to use. Sometimes a fresh start means they stop fixing what already worked okay, you know?
