Finally cleared my first $10k month as a freelancer doing payment reconciliations

Three years ago I started helping small shops in Portland fix their bookkeeping messes, and last month a client's credit card processor had a glitch that doubled their fees. I caught it, got them a refund, and they referred me to three other businesses. How did you land your first big break in payment side work?

Speaking of catching glitches, I once found a restaurant chain in Seattle had been double-billed for their merchant account fees for six months straight because someone fat-fingered a routing number. They were SO grateful they paid me triple my usual rate to sort the whole mess out.
