Watched a panel at Anime Expo 2023 that totally flipped how I watch dubs vs subs

Watched a few panels like that over the years and honestly most of them are just people hyping up their own opinions like it's some deep truth. Dubs vs subs is just a preference thing, not a moral stance or a life choice. Some dubs are good, some subs are bad, it really depends on the show and the voice actors. Getting all worked up over which way someone watches anime feels like a waste of energy to me. But hey, if that panel made you rethink things, more power to you I guess.

Kinda feels like subs can miss cultural jokes too though.

Panel speakers always overstate their case because it makes for a better show, but the reality is subs preserve the original intent and voice direction which dubs almost always mess up. If you can read along, there's no reason to settle for a translation that has to match mouth flaps.
