Subbed over dubbed, still not sorry about it

I used to think subbed anime was for people who wanted to feel superior, and dubbed was the normal way to watch. Then I tried watching a popular show dubbed last month and the main character sounded like a cartoon mascot on caffeine. Switched to the sub version of the same episode and the emotion actually hit, like the voice actor was crying for real in that scene. Now I can't go back, the timing and jokes land better too even if I miss some background text. My buddy in Chicago still swears dubbed is easier while folding laundry, but I told him it's about the performance not the convenience. Anyone else flip sides on this and feel like they unlocked a whole different show?

My cousin Mike in Denver went through this exact thing but backwards, he watched subs for years then tried dubs during a road trip and now he says he can't hear Goku without the Funimation guy yelling in his ear while he's driving. Last week we were on a call and he tried to explain the plot of some mech show to me by mimicking the dub actors and I swear he sounded like a bad infomercial. Somehow now we can't even watch the same anime together without arguing about which version of the crying scene is more real, like we're debating sports teams.
