Still fuming about that filler arc argument I got into on Crunchyroll's comment section
I was sitting in my apartment in Portland last Thursday night, just trying to enjoy the new season of that mecha show, and some guy jumped in a thread yelling that all filler arcs are pointless and a waste of time. I replied saying how the beach episode in episode 37 actually had character development for the side characters that paid off later, and he went off on me calling me a casual fan who doesnt get real anime. The stupid thing is I responded with a full breakdown of three different filler arcs that tied into the main plot, citing episode numbers and everything, but he just kept saying 'cope harder.' I ended up spending an hour arguing with someone who clearly didnt watch past season 2. Has anyone else had a pointless debate like this on a streaming platform where you put in effort and the other person just dodges everything?

GOD, that "cope harder" thing gets me every time! It's like they think saying it wins the argument automatically. But here's what I keep wondering about those types - do you think they even believe what they're saying, or are they just trolling because they're bored at work? Because I've had guys spend 45 minutes arguing with me about how the beach episode in Naruto didnt matter, then I check their profile and they've got 2000 comments in the last month all saying the same copy-paste stuff. Like, are these bots or just lonely people who found their whole identity in hating filler?

The thing about that "cope harder" response is it tells you everything... that guy knows he cant actually argue the points you made so he just falls back on being dismissive. Ive noticed the people who scream the loudest about filler arcs usually skip the series entirely or just watch the big action moments on YouTube. The beach episode thing you mentioned is a perfect example, the quiet character moments in filler let the show breathe so the serious stuff hits harder later. But the real angle nobody brings up is how these streaming platform comment sections are designed for outrage, the algorithm rewards that aggressive back and forth because it keeps you clicking. You basically got sucked into a system where someone with no real investment in the show can just throw out hot takes and never actually engage with the substance. I wonder how many of those people would still be calling themselves fans if they had to actually sit through an entire 26 episode season with no skip button.
