My buddy said watch Bakemonogatari at 1.5x speed and I laughed at him

He told me last week that the dialogue scenes drag so bad you lose nothing by speeding them up. I tried it on episode 3 and he was completely right, the subs still read fine and the pacing actually felt better. Anyone else got a weird viewing trick that actually works?

Episode 3 is actually a rough one to test that on because the snail arc is already one of the slower ones. Did your buddy say to do it for the whole series or just specific episodes? I tried it on episode 12 and the subs were flying by so fast I couldn't keep up with the wordplay, so I feel like the trick only works on the more dialogue-heavy sections. What speed does he usually run it at for the long conversations, because 1.5x felt way too fast for some of the banter scenes.

Episode 3 is where I first tried it too, and let me tell you, I laughed at myself for laughing at my buddy when he first suggested it. I set it to 1.4x on VLC and suddenly the whole thing clicked - I didn't feel like I was fighting the pacing to get to the actual story. I'm old enough that my eyes aren't what they used to be, so catching subs at any speed is its own special kind of struggle, but this actually worked for me on the slower arcs. That said, I tried it on the Hitagi Crab scenes and the wordplay got away from me so fast I felt like my brain was chasing a train.

You really have to dial in the speed per episode or it's a disaster? Seems like more effort than just watching it the normal way at that point. I mean if you have to switch between 1x and 1.4x depending on the scene, is it actually improving the experience or just making you micromanage the playback? Feels like people overthink this stuff sometimes, just watch the show.
