Hot take: 'Cowboy Bebop' is overrated and I'll die on that hill

I was at Anime Expo 2019 in LA and this guy in a Spike Spiegel cosplay literally argued with me for 10 minutes about why it's the 'perfect anime.' I told him I fell asleep twice trying to watch it and he looked at me like I kicked his dog. The pacing is just way too slow for me and the hype never matched what I actually saw on screen. Anyone else feel like some classics get a free pass just because they're old?

LMAO the "perfect anime" argument is wild, like my guy it's a show where 90% of the action is just Jet making bell peppers and beef. I fell asleep three times before I even made it to the movie episode, and the pacing was so slow I checked my phone more than the screen. Classic or not, that show is basically a nap with a cool soundtrack.

Dude, your comment just reminded me of my friend Mark. He prides himself on being the ultimate anime gatekeeper, constantly telling people they have no taste. He swore Cowboy Bebop was the greatest thing ever made. So I lent him my blu-ray box set and he took it home all excited. A week later he returned it and said he got through the first three episodes but kept falling asleep on his couch, woke up with the menu screen looping, and gave up. He admitted the jazz was cool though, so he just listens to the soundtrack on Spotify now and claims he's "experienced" the show.
