Vent: my ad spend got cut 40% and I finally stopped checking the dashboard every 10 minutes
My old boss told me back in March that checking your campaign dashboard more than twice a day is just anxiety with extra steps. I laughed at him at the time. Then last month my biggest account dropped from $8k a month to $4,800 and I had no choice but to stop refreshing every hour. Funny thing is, after about two weeks of only looking at numbers on Monday and Friday, I caught a placement issue I'd been staring past for months. The junk sites were eating 15% of the budget and I only saw it because I was looking at a weekly report instead of a live feed. Anyone else notice they make better calls when they step back from the real time data, or am I just telling myself a nice story here?
Same thing happened to me last year when a client paused their account for six weeks. I went from checking bids three times a day to barely looking, and when I finally pulled a search terms report I found $2,100 wasted on mobile app placements nobody had caught. The weird part is the numbers didn't change, my brain just had room to actually see them. When you refresh every hour you only see the last hour, you miss the pattern that shows up over ten days. Stepping back turns you from a scoreboard watcher into someone who actually runs the account.
