The $140 retargeting test that quietly paid for itself

Back in 2018 I threw $140 at a Facebook retargeting campaign for my little Etsy shop, just to see if the old pixel tricks still worked. It brought in 9 sales, which covered the ad spend and then some, but the real win was learning how fast audiences fatigue. Now I run the same test every quarter with different creative, and it never fails to show me something new. Anybody else find that small spend experiments beat big budget guesses every time?

...and that's exactly why I keep telling people to just burn a couple hundred bucks on nonsense instead of pretending their spreadsheet knows everything. My version of this was $150 on a retargeting test for my candle shop, and the only thing it taught me was that my dog looks way better in the ads than I do. The "insight" was that nobody clicked the fancy lifestyle shots, but they went wild for a blurry photo of her sitting next to the wax melts. Small experiments are basically paid therapy for your marketing ego, you know? What's the dumbest thing a tiny test ever taught you?

Same lesson as dating apps: the goofy, unpolished stuff always wins over the perfect profile.
