Rant: I quit checking my ad account every morning at 6am and my client fired me over it
Three weeks ago I decided to stop opening my ad accounts before coffee. I had been doing it for two years straight, phone in hand at 6am every single day, refreshing spend and pacing like it was a slot machine. My biggest client found out I was not checking until 9am and sent me a nasty email saying I was not "on top of things" anymore. Here is the thing though, nothing changed in those three hours. The spend was the same, the click through was the same, and I actually caught a billing glitch at 9am that I would have missed at 6am because I was too tired to read the numbers right. I told him flat out that staring at a dashboard does not make the dashboard better. He did not like that answer and we parted ways last Friday. I lost a $4,200 a month retainer over my sleep schedule, and I would do it again. Does anyone else here actually get punished for not doom refreshing their campaigns, or is it just me?
Did the guy ever actually tell you what he was afraid would happen in those three hours? Because that is the part that gets me. A lot of clients do not want a manager, they want a witness. Someone who can say yes I saw it at 6am, nothing blew up, so we are fine. It is not about the numbers at all, it is about them feeling like somebody is standing guard. You can hire a robot to watch spend, and honestly most dashboards already do that with alerts. What he was really paying for was the story he tells himself at night that his money is being watched by a human. So when you stopped, he lost the story, not the results. Losing the retainer still stings, but I bet he replaces you with someone who refreshes at 4am and delivers the exact same numbers.
