Question about ad buying for my grooming shop, Google ads vs just boosting posts on Facebook
I ran Google ads for my shop for about 8 months straight and burned through $1,900 with maybe 12 bookings to show for it. Then a buddy who owns a barber shop in Portland told me to just boost posts on Facebook for $15 a day and see what happens. Two weeks in and I've gotten 31 new clients off that, mostly people within 5 miles of me. Is Google ads just dead for local service stuff now, or was I doing something wrong with my keywords?
mostly people within 5 miles of me" is the whole story right there. Google ads are for people who already know they want a thing and are searching for it, but half the time they're three towns over or just price shopping. Facebook just dumps your face and your shop on people sitting on their couch two streets away. It's the same reason a church pancake breakfast does better with a sign on the corner than a listing in the paper. You're not selling a product people hunt for, you're selling "hey, that place looks good, I should finally get my dog groomed." That's a nudge, not a search. Your keywords were probably fine, the whole setup was just pointed at the wrong kind of person.
