My $400 retargeting spend got zero sales but a 5x CTR lift

Last month I ran a strictly retargeting campaign for my local landscaping business in Boise. I had 800 site visitors in the pixel but nobody was converting. I threw $400 at it with three ad sets, different creatives, all showing the same offer. The CTR was 5x higher than my normal ads, like 3.1% versus 0.6%. But not ONE booking came through. I thought retargeting was supposed to be the easy win. What I learned is that my audience was mostly tire kickers comparing prices, not ready to hire. The clicks were all just people re-checking my services page. Now I'm wondering, has anyone else had high CTR retargeting that just flat out tanked on conversions? Did you change the offer or the audience settings to fix it?

That 3.1% CTR is brutal because it gives you false hope, I've been there. $400 is a real chunk of change for a local business and watching it burn with zero bookings stings extra hard. The tire kicker thing is spot on, retargeting just reminds people you exist but it can't force them to make a decision they aren't ready for. I had a similar thing with a roofing client of mine, tons of clicks on "financing options" but nobody actually applied for the financing. Sometimes you gotta switch the retargeting ad to something softer, like a helpful guide or a before and after photo, instead of the same "book now" message. Or maybe cut the retargeting down to people who visited your pricing page at least twice, that might filter out the worst of the looky-loos. Hang in there, it's not that retargeting is broken, it's just that a click is not the same as a handshake.

Man, that CTR tease is like getting a date with your crush and then she spends the whole night talking about her ex. @max_ross nailed it, a click just means they looked, not that they wanna commit. I once blew $300 retargeting people who viewed my service page for like 5 seconds, and all I got was a bunch of clicks from someone in my own office lol. The fix that kinda worked for me was splitting the audience, one group for people who hit the booking page and left, and another for everyone else. That way I only pushed hard offers to the warm ones and sent the looky-loos a simple "here's a project gallery" ad instead. Still not a goldmine, but at least I stopped paying for folks to window shop.
