How my office's daily huddle fixed my puppy's listening skills

We have quick check-ins at work every morning. I started doing the same with my puppy before training. He pays attention better now.

That's actually pretty smart. Dogs are big on patterns and knowing what comes next. The huddle probably works like a clear on/off switch for his brain. Before the huddle it's playtime, after it he knows it's time to focus on you. It cuts out the guesswork. My neighbor's dog improved with a similar routine using a specific mat.

Saw a trainer online talk about using a "focus word" before each session. It's the same idea, giving the dog a clear signal that playtime is over and work is starting. They said even a simple thing like putting on the same treat pouch or sitting on a specific stool can work. It builds a ritual that tells the puppy's brain it's time to switch modes, just like your huddle does.

My beagle, Stanley, never caught on to that sort of thing. We tried a whole routine with a special leash and everything before walks. His brain is just a pinball machine on full tilt all the time. It might work for some pups, but others are just wired differently.
