A hidden compartment in my mom's childhood desk held letters from a secret pen pal.
I was helping my mom clean out her old room at my grandma's place last weekend. We moved this heavy wooden desk she used as a kid, and I spotted a weird gap in the back. I gently pushed on a panel, and it popped open to reveal a stack of old letters tied with string. They were all addressed to my mom from someone named Clara, with dates from the late 1950s. My mom looked totally confused and said she never had a pen pal named Clara. The letters mention little things like school dances but also vague hints about a neighbor who vanished suddenly. I've been calling up aunts and uncles to see if they remember anything, but no one knows Clara. Now I'm hooked on figuring out who she was and what really happened back then.

Check the return addresses on the envelopes themselves, not just the letters. Sometimes people forget old addresses, but the postmarks can show exactly where they were sent from. Your mom might not remember a Clara because it could have been a neighbor using a fake name for some reason. The post office might have old records if you have a specific street.

Oh man, you're spot on with the postmark idea! I've noticed that people leave little trails in their mail without even knowing it. My aunt had a bunch of old holiday cards, and the stamps showed places she traveled decades ago. It's like a secret map of someone's life!

A neighbor just up and disappeared? That's way more intense than swapping gossip about sock hops. Your family mystery just got real.
