My go-to hike from years back led me astray last season

I used to know every turn on that trail without a map. Then logging work up the mountain altered the landscape. I missed a crucial junction and hiked extra miles in the dark. Thinking back, I should have paid more attention to the NEW markers. It was a humbling reminder to stay alert.

Heard a podcast say updated maps are useless if you don't actually look at them on the trail. Was it that same old confidence from knowing the path that made you skip checking the new signs? I've done that before, trusting memory over what's right in front of me. Getting turned around like that really makes you double-check everything next time.

Yosemite last year... map guided me without once opening it.

On the John Muir Trail last fall, I carried the newest map but only glanced at it twice. Honestly, knowing I had updated info let me relax and enjoy the views instead of stressing over every turn. When I did hit a confusing split, pulling out the map saved me from adding miles to my day. Tbh, even if you don't stare at it constantly, just having it changes how you hike. It's like a safety net that makes the whole trip smoother.
