My go-to method for finding quiet villages in Europe

I always take local buses when I travel. In Portugal, this led me to a town with a great castle view and few people. It's become my favorite way to explore. What other transport tricks work for hidden gems?

Gavin that regional train tip is solid. When you get off at a random stop in Austria, how do you even pick which one? I'd be worried about getting stranded somewhere with no buses back. Do you just look for a village name that sounds cool?

Actually, you gotta check the bus schedule first before you hop off! I look at the posted timetable right on the platform to see when the next bus back to a train line runs. A cool name is just a bonus.

In Croatia, hopping on the local ferries instead of tourist boats led me to this QUIET island with a family-run konoba. I did the same with regional trains in Austria. Getting off at a random stop puts you in a postcard village.
