Overdoing gradients made my logo look dated overnight
Limit gradient use to avoid a cheap, outdated feel.

A design blog mentioned how gradients often peak and fade in trends. They age poorly when used as a crutch instead of for function. Sticking to subtle shifts in color seems to last longer, thankfully.

Yeah the "tone-on-tone" point is so real. I got burned slapping a loud gradient on a site header that looked dated in like a year. Now I just test them in small spots, like a button hover, to see if it actually adds anything.

Totally feel that, @jesse_ward. My old portfolio had this wild gradient background that just screams 2016 now. Sticking to simple color shifts is definitely the way to go.
