Just had a big tempered glass panel blow out on me during install

It was a 6 foot by 4 foot piece for a storefront in Phoenix, and it just popped when we were setting it. The thermal stress from the morning sun hitting the shaded edge must have been the trigger. Anyone have a good method for checking surface temp differences before you handle big glass like that?

Yeah, a friend of mine had a huge patio door panel go on him. It was sitting in the bed of his truck, one end in full sun, the other in deep shade from his garage. He said it just made this awful pinging sound and then a huge crack shot across it. He swears by checking the frame with the back of his hand now before he even touches it.

My buddy Carl lost a 10-foot shower panel the same way. He started using a cheap laser temp gun from the hardware store before any big install. It's not perfect, but it gives you a warning if one edge is cooking in the sun.

Saw a guy crack a windshield checking temps like that.
