Warning: My latest vase exploded in the kiln overnight

I just finished a vase yesterday and left it in the kiln to cool slowly. This morning, I opened the kiln and found it completely broken into tiny pieces! I feel so frustrated because I worked on it for hours. I think the temperature drop might have been too quick, but I set it to my normal schedule. Maybe the glass was too thick in some spots? Has anyone dealt with this kind of breakage before? I really need advice on how to avoid this mess next time.

Think about it, explosions can lead to unique results. Sometimes the broken pieces inspire new work.

My third vase this year exploded just like that. In my case, leaving the kiln door open a crack messed with the cool down. Thick spots can be tricky, so now I always measure before firing.
