Warning: My rock garden project showed me how lazy river stones really are.
They all come from the same place but end up everywhere.

Man, I feel you. The only thing that worked for me was setting them in a thin layer of concrete mix, like you'd use for stepping stones. Stops the rolling around completely.

Last summer, I had a bunch of river rocks in my garden that kept shifting. I used gravel glue instead, which worked for a while but washed out in heavy rain. @joseph_torres, your concrete idea sounds more permanent for stuff like that. My neighbor actually poured a whole patio slab to keep his grill from moving. It was overkill, but now nothing budges. I might try the thin layer trick for my driveway edges next spring.

Concrete cracks eventually though, @joseph_torres.

Wait, but have you ever just let them do their thing? In my patch, the stones sliding after rain makes new patterns EVERY season. It's like the garden stays ALIVE and changes on its own. Sure, concrete locks them down, but then it just feels dead and static to me. Those little shifts and rolls give it REAL character, you know? I'd rather work WITH their nature than fight it.
