Hot take: My visit to the Moeraki Boulders has me questioning tourist impact

Just returned from New Zealand where we spent a day at the Moeraki Boulders... those incredible spherical concretions on the beach felt almost magical to touch. I'm torn because letting people get up close seems vital for sparking interest in geology, but watching folks climb on them for photos made me worry about accelerated erosion. Where does everyone else land on this balance between access and preservation?

Prioritize preservation... even if it means less access?

The Rosetta Stone's 3D scan project let millions study it online, something physical preservation in a glass case could never achieve. Handling originals causes wear, but if artifacts aren't accessible, what's the point of preserving them? Scholars in remote countries made breakthroughs using digital copies, things that would've taken decades otherwise. Locking history away turns museums into vaults, not centers of learning. We can balance care with sharing, but erring on the side of access keeps history alive for everyone.

Wait, so we're locking away history now?
