Showerthought: A comment about my video lighting made me rethink my whole setup

Someone on my last review said my hands looked like 'ghostly pale blurs' because I was filming under a single bright ceiling light. I bought a cheap 2-pack of ring lights from Amazon for $35 and started using a diffuser. The difference in showing small details, like the texture on a phone case, is actually crazy. What's the cheapest lighting upgrade you've made that actually worked?

What about just using a window?

My 1920s apartment has windows that face a brick wall 4 feet away lol. Not exactly scenic. I picked up one of those cheap tension rod setups with blackout curtains and it blocks like 90% of the light. The key is getting the rod tight enough so it doesn't sag in the middle.

Honestly that tension rod struggle is too real. Mine took like three tries and a lot of muttered curses before it finally held. Ngl I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm running some kind of illegal operation with how aggressively dark I keep my apartment. Tbh the whole setup is held together by sheer luck and a prayer at this point. But hey, at least I can sleep past sunrise now without feeling like a total vampire.
