I thought those phone camera lens protectors were a total waste of cash

My friend in Seattle kept telling me to get one for my new phone, but I figured the main lenses were tough enough. Then I dropped it on a gravel path last month and the protector cracked instead of the actual glass. It cost me eight bucks for a pack of three, and swapping it out took two minutes. Has anyone else had a cheap accessory save their gear from a bigger repair bill?

Totally agree on the lens protectors! Got the cheap plastic kind from a gas station for my last phone. The main camera glass got a tiny scratch anyway, but that protector took the full hit from a drop onto concrete. Saved me a huge headache.

Honestly it's the same with screen protectors... people act like they're pointless until you see that first crack spread across the cheap layer instead of the actual display. It feels like we're all just buying a little bit of luck for a few dollars. I've started putting those basic protectors on so many things now, like the watch face or even my kindle. It's weird how a tiny bit of plastic can make you feel so much less worried about using your stuff.

My wife bought these clear vinyl sheets for our kitchen cabinets last year, just to stop the wood from getting water stains. It's the same idea, a cheap layer that takes the damage so the real thing stays nice. We do this everywhere, from phone screens to furniture coasters to that plastic on new remote controls. It's like we're all trying to buy time for our stuff, to keep it looking new a little longer. The real object becomes something we almost never touch directly, always through a protector. Makes you wonder what we're really protecting sometimes, the item or just the feeling of it being untouched.
