I used to think a cheap website was fine for getting clients, but a guy at a coffee shop in Austin changed my mind.

What exactly did that guy in Austin say about your site? Was it the look of it, or something specific that made it seem cheap? Charlie_ellis has a point about filtering for better clients, but I'm curious about the actual moment it clicked for you.

That guy's name was Ben, and he was looking at my portfolio on his phone. He literally laughed and said it looked like a high school kid made it in 2004. Honestly, it was the generic stock photos of smiling people that did it, the ones you see on every free template. Tbh, I thought I was being smart saving money, but he just saw a person who didn't care about details. Now I get that a site is just a fancy business card, and you wouldn't hand someone a card you printed at home on cereal box cardboard.

Consider how a cheap site makes you look when competing against bigger companies. That guy probably saw your site and thought you weren't serious. Investing a bit more upfront filters for clients who value quality.
