A client in Chicago told me to stop chasing the 'big fish' and it stuck with me
I was on a call with a long term client, just a small business owner I've done web work for over two years. We were talking about my slow month and I mentioned I was trying to land a corporate account. He said, 'Pat, you keep looking for the whale that'll feed you for a year, but you're swimming past the school of fish that feeds you every day.' He meant I was ignoring steady, smaller jobs from people like him to chase one huge, stressful project. For the last six months, I've turned down little $500 updates thinking they were a waste of time... but those add up. Now I'm rethinking my whole lead list. Has anyone else built a stable income just from a bunch of smaller, regular clients instead of a few big ones?

Your client basically just gave you the best business advice for free (and it wasn't even a billable hour). Chasing whales sounds cool until you realize you're just a guy with a tiny fishing rod.

Look, I get the point, but calling it the best business advice ever feels like a stretch. That client's view works for his small shop, but some industries actually run on landing those big contracts. Maybe the real problem is turning down the small jobs without having the whale already hooked. It just seems like bad timing, not a whole wrong plan.
