My tax setup went from a shoebox to a spreadsheet and it saved my sanity

For the first two years, I just threw every receipt into an actual shoebox and tried to sort it in April. It took me a full week in 2022 and I missed a $1,200 deduction. Now I take a picture of every receipt with an app called Dext right after a purchase and tag it as a business expense. Has anyone found a better way to track mileage without it being a huge pain?

Going digital was a total game changer for me too. I used to have that same shoebox full of crumpled paper and it was a nightmare. For mileage, I just use a basic notes app on my phone and make a quick entry every time I get in the car. I note the date, where I went, and the odometer. It takes two seconds and then I can just add it all up at tax time.

Totally agree, going digital is a lifesaver. @nancybailey has the right idea, but I just use a simple app that logs trips automatically.

That notes app method is a solid start, but it can get messy real fast. In my experience, you need the start and end odometer reading for each trip to actually prove the mileage to the IRS if they ask. Just writing down the destination isn't enough. A dedicated mileage tracker app that runs in the background on your phone is way less of a headache than doing it all manually.
