Lost $800 on a web dev project because I didn't get a contract signed first.

I was sitting in a coffee shop in Austin, laptop open, finishing up a client's site. They ghosted me after I sent the invoice. Now I always ask for 50% up front before writing a line of code. Has anyone else had a client bail without paying?
