Finally got a client to pay their late invoice after I started adding a 5% fee for anything over 30 days.

I was chasing a $1200 payment from a design client for almost two months, and adding that clear late fee to the next reminder email got me a check within a week, so has anyone else found a specific tactic that actually gets slow payers to move?

Why do people only respect a rule when it costs them money? Your late fee worked because it turned a vague social debt into a real financial one. It's the same reason parking tickets exist. Most folks will ignore a polite ask because there's no consequence. But attach a clear, unavoidable cost to their delay, and suddenly it's a priority. It's a sad but true fact about human nature.

Casey_harris nailed it with the parking ticket example. We all know that free spot is a 15-minute loading zone, but we'll risk it until the meter maid shows up. It's like a weird tax on our own bad behavior.

Wish I could say my charm gets invoices paid. Turns out my charm is worth about five percent a month.
