Warning: That $450 heat treating furnace I bought off eBay was a total scam

I figured I was getting a steal on a used furnace from some guy in Ohio. Hooked it up last week and it barely hit 1200F when it was supposed to go to 2000F. Called the seller and he ghosted me after saying "it worked fine when I shipped it." Had to eat the cost and buy a real one from a supplier I should have gone with first. Has anyone else gotten burned buying used gear online?

Wait, did you run it through a full heating cycle before you decided it was broken? I only ask because some furnaces, especially bigger ones, have a safety limit on them that stops them from going over a certain temp until you bypass it or let it run a cycle first. My buddy almost returned his kiln for the same thing, turned out he just needed to hold the button down for 10 seconds to unlock the high temp mode. Not saying your seller wasn't shady for ghosting you, that part is definitely messed up. But maybe check the manual if you still have it, or look up the model number online for any hidden settings. Could save you from buying another one if it's actually fine.

Hold down a button for 10 seconds? Man, I spent an hour cursing at that thing with a hammer before I calmed down and actually read the manual. Turns out I'm the kind of guy who buys a 2000 degree furnace but can't figure out a simple safety lock. At least my driveway has a cool new dent from the hammer.
