Pro tip: A trip to a family-run foundry in Portugal changed my view on furnace upkeep

I was on vacation in Portugal and toured a small, family-run iron foundry that's been around for generations. They showed me their simple daily check routine for the furnace lining, something we often skip in our busy shop. When I got back, we started doing a quick visual inspection before each pour, and it's caught a couple of small cracks early. It just goes to show you can pick up good habits from anywhere. In my experience, small changes like this can prevent big headaches down the line.

Where in Portugal was that? Man, that's cool... it's wild how the old-school small shops always have the best little tricks.

Notice how those little shops solve problems bigger stores can't touch. The cobbler who sews a broken bag strap instead of telling you to buy a new one. The tailor who lets out a seam with fabric from inside the lining. They work with what's already there, which feels almost like a lost art now.

Actually that was in Spain, but they have those cool little shops too.
