Talking to a farmer at the market changed how I source my peonies
He said most of his blooms get shipped out of state, and the local stuff I was buying was actually from his farm three days ago. Made me realize I need to ask more questions about 'local' labels. How do you guys verify your suppliers are actually nearby?

My butcher's "local" beef is from three states over.

That's a great point about asking questions at the market. It's true labels can be tricky. For something like beef, @walker.cole, the term "local" can legally cover a huge area, sometimes hundreds of miles. I always ask for the farm's name and town right away. If they can't tell you that on the spot, it's a red flag. Getting a straight answer about the actual distance is the only real way to know.

Lol three states over, that's basically a road trip for a steak. Might as well call it "distant" beef at that point.
