Overheard a customer say roses are 'too basic' and it got me heated
I was restocking the cooler yesterday and heard some lady tell her friend that red roses are 'just so basic and overdone'. I almost dropped a bucket of stems lol. Look, I get that people want to be unique, but roses are popular for a reason - they last, they smell good, and they sell. If she'd seen my order sheet last Valentine's week with 800+ stems going out the door in 2 days, I doubt she'd call them basic. Has anyone else had customers trash talk classic flowers like that? How do you handle it without rolling your eyes?

Oh man, Andrew, you just reminded me of this one Christmas season... we had a guy come in and literally say "roses are for people with no imagination" while picking up a mixed bouquet. Two days later he comes back and buys every single red rose we had left for his wife because she specifically asked for them. I was like, see? Even the cynics come around. Honestly, I think sometimes people just wanna sound cool or different, but there is something about opening a batch of fresh roses that smell like your grandmother's garden... you can't fake that.

Huh. I actually used to be one of those people who thought roses were boring. Then I got a bouquet from a coworker after a rough week and man, I get it now. They're popular for good reason.

Call out the "grandma's garden" thing. Roses are great but that's a specific rose smell, not all of them. Most roses from a florist barely have any scent. They're bred for looks and shelf life, not smell. The really fragrant ones are the old garden varieties, heirloom types. You gotta hunt for those. So yeah, roses are awesome, just don't expect that classic rose perfume from every bouquet you grab.
