My sister said I should stop using floral foam for centerpieces

She works at a garden center and kept telling me it's bad for the environment and messy. I tried making a big wedding centerpiece last month using chicken wire and moss instead. It held up better through a five hour reception and was way cleaner to clean up. Has anyone else switched away from foam for large arrangements?
