My plumber saw my cooler of hydrangeas and asked if I'd tried the 'hot water trick' yet.

He said his mom, who ran a shop in the 90s, would dip the stems in boiling water for 30 seconds before arranging, and after trying it on a wilting batch of 'Limelight' hydrangeas from a wedding last Saturday, I can't believe how well it works to stop the droop.

That boiling water trick reminds me of my grandma dunking roses in vodka, which honestly sounds like a cry for help.

The vodka thing is wild. My buddy's aunt used to spray her tomato plants with gin to keep bugs off.

Sounds like a family tradition of using liquor for pest control. My great uncle swore by whiskey for his rose bushes. Some generational wisdom is just a little boozy.
