I was convinced my grandma's pickle recipe needed sugar, but her old notes from 1972 proved me wrong

She just used salt, water, and dill, and after a week they were the best I've ever had. Has anyone else had a family recipe surprise them like that?

Yeah, sugar in everything now. Tastes like dessert. The old way just hits different.

My aunt's cornbread recipe was the same way. I always added a quarter cup of sugar because that's how my mom made it. Found her original card that just said cornmeal, salt, buttermilk, and bacon grease. Tried it plain and the savory flavor with chili was perfect. Makes you wonder how those little changes crept in over the years.

Ever notice how recipes get sweeter when people stop cooking with cast iron? That old bacon grease seasoning changes everything.
