Warning: I used a 3/4 inch auger bit on a cedar post last month and it split clean in half.
I learned the hard way that for cedar, you need to pre-drill a pilot hole first, even with a new bit, so has anyone else found a better method to avoid this waste?

Wait, you used a THREE QUARTER inch bit on a cedar post? That's huge, no wonder it split! I'm honestly surprised it even tried to bite before it blew apart. I always start with a tiny pilot hole for anything over a quarter inch in soft wood, it's just not worth the risk. Cedar is so pretty but it can be a real pain to work with sometimes.

My cousin once tried to drill a hole in a frozen hot dog with a power drill.
